Who Are the Homeless and Housing Insecure?

Homelessness is often associated with people living visibly on the streets of major cities, but the reality is far broader. Many individuals and families experiencing homelessness are invisible—living in cars, RVs, tents, campgrounds, or low-cost motels while trying to stay safe and survive.

According to national data from Homelessness in America: Overview of Data and Causes, the leading cause of homelessness for women is domestic violence. For families, the top drivers include:

When the cost of housing rises faster than income—especially in large cities—families and individuals are pushed into crisis.

One effective solution is shared housing, where multiple people share a home and split living expenses. Shared housing helps reduce financial pressure, provides stability, and creates a pathway toward long-term housing security.

Our work focuses on helping people in these situations find safety, stability, and a sustainable path forward.
